November 10, 2020Climbing mountains with toddlers is no stranger. Many young nature lovers do it. Like Cancalita Anindya Putri, 27 and Bima Yudiarto, 27.
NINDY, as Cancalita Anindya Putri is called, is not an ordinary person in the world of mountain climbing. He has been familiar with mountain climbing routes since he was in high school. His climbing hobby continued during college.
He successfully crushed all the mountains in Central Java. He even visited several mountain peaks in East and West Java. These high flying hours make Nindy and her husband determined to invite their toddler.
Last July, Nindy took her two children who are still toddlers to post 1 Mount Lawu, Puncak Mongkrang, Tawangmangu, Bukit Cumbri Wonogiri, and Semuncar Boyolali Waterfall.
The important thing is that we must be well-prepared. Complete all the gear the kids need. So it’s not just taking children to climb mountains.
But the consequence is that we as parents must ensure that their children wear complete and quality gear,”explained Nindy. Nindy also does a lot of research on climbing with toddlers.
She readarticles, consulted with pediatricians, asked for references from fellow climbers who also often invite their children. One more important thing, prepare mentally as a parent.
“When we climb alone when we are tired it feels bad mood; especially with children. Well, we have to be really strong mentally so that during the trip, the children were still happy and didn’t feel tired even though they were tired.
My husband and I also have to be cheerful, invite them to sing, chat, and be willing to answer all their questions,”she explained.
Her first child, Gioffrey Rajendra, 5, climbed Gunung Kidul Purbo Volcano at the age of 8 months. At that time, he was accompanied by his mother.
However, after consulting with medics and fellow hikers who are more experienced with carrying children, Nindy concluded that the right time to take a child to climb is when the child can already express what he feels.
For example, if a child feels sleepy, he can say. If it’s cold, he says it’s cold. And so forth.
Therefore, while climbing, we as parents know exactly what the child feels. If there is anything, we don’t need to guess,”said this interior designer woman.
Before leaving, Nindy and her husband trained their two children by taking a cheerful camping at Cemoro Kandang first to feel the cold. Only then go up to post 2 to Puncak Lawu.
In that exercise, Nindy continues to look for gaps in what her two children need along the way. For example, his second child, Jagad Mahendragiri Sadajiwa, who is 1 year and 8 months old, is obliged to snack during the ascent.
So Nindy also has to prepare more snacks.
“The guide can see how come climbers are well-prepared at random. So when my husband and I took the kids to go uphill, the guides were okay.
Because the gear I use is complete, “he added. The judgmental question that Nindy often gets is, aren’t you afraid that her child will catch up in the mountains?
Every weekend, Nindy often gets billed by her children. ‘Mami, when are you going to the mountains again?’
“Anyway, you have to be clever at managing your time. Including children’s sleep hours should not be missed. So they don’t get tired and don’t travel too late, “she said.
Meanwhile, special children’s mountaineering gear is rarely found in Indonesia. Only one brand provides such services. Even if there are items, it will be difficult to get the right size.
The solution, you can buy the gear you need through online shipping from abroad. Or if you are lucky, you can join the services of entrusting a friend who is travelling abroad.
“I took a long time to collect gear for the children to be complete because I brought two toddlers at once. So they really have to make them safe and comfortable during the climb, “she said.
