May 24, 2020Ferdowsi Tusi (940 – 1020Ad) was born in Khorasan at East of Iran. Nobody knows what his real name is and who his father is. The only thing we know about him is that he was from a noble born family. At his time the amount of noble born Persian families decreased and the majority of the people of Iran were losing their identities to foreigner conquers.
According to some unreliable resources, Ferdowsi was a landlord and had an easy life thanks to the income from his estates. It is said that he was a off-spring of the Sassanid.
He was an able poet and his book is called “The Book of Kings” or Shahnameh. Ferdowsi book is the most popular and the most important national epic in Iran and other Persian nations.
Ferdowsi spent more than thirty years to write the Shahnameh.
Shahnameh describes the story of creation and the history of the ancient Persia till the Arabic conquest in the 7th century. Shahnameh contains over 50,000 couplets in Persian.
Shahhameh is much larger than Homer Iliad and Odyssey. In other words, it is the world’s longest epic poem written by an author. Shahnameh played a crucial role in reviving the Persian language and the ancient believes; considering the fact that Shahnameh is written in Persian while whole of Iran was occupied by the foreigners. Shahnameh played a major significant contribution to the revival of Persian culture.
Shahnameh contains exotic poems about a great Persian legend known as Rostam.
Interested in some lines from Shahnameh? Here it is:
“I had so many toils in the past thirty years to revive the language of the great empire of Persia.”
Ferdowsi played a major role in the Persian literature. After Ferdowsi wrote Shahnameh, other poets tried to copy his style and this caused the total revival of the Persian language and culture. But, none of the similar high copies of Shahnaeh could achieve the same degree of popularity and fame as Ferdowsi’s “Book of the Kings”.
Ferdowsi is the father of the revival pf the Persian language.
The Persians are reading and reciting Shahnameh more than one thousand years and still proud of their ancient rich cultural heritage.
Ferdowsi passed away in 1020 AD in East of Iran. After his death some religious extremists introduced him as an infidel but the Ghaznavid governor of Khorasan constructed a mausoleum over his grave but nothing remained from those extremists. A good lesson for bad guys.
The Tomb of Ferdowsi looks like the tomb of Cyrus the Great and is built in the style of Achaemenid architecture.
Today many people from Persia and other nations come to visit Ferdowsi’s tomb every year. Actually it become a tourism destination in Iran for those who know the meaning of grace, wisdom, knowledge and culture.
